ARBE4102 Construction Technology and Services

Preamble.
During the course you will be using the assignments project drawings to study the structural and building services systems of a high-rise buildings. The assignment approach will be using an existing building, where you will be asked to provide concept structure and building services elements and integration from your learning.
In Assignment 2 you will be looking at the structural systems based on the assignment project architectural drawings provided and lecture material to understand the engineering techniques, materials and methods of construction.
Introduction.
The new planning studies have envisaged that the key components of the city will develop with the east end of Newcastle as the residential and leisure precinct, cultural and administrative facilities at the civic, commercial and office accommodation on Honeysuckle and retail activities at the west end. Height limitations of buildings have been reviewed and relaxed and high-rise construction is now permitted across the city. The directors of your firm have concentrated on low rise construction (up to 2 to 3 storeys) over many years and have built a very successful business and brand. However, they now wish to explore opportunities in entering the high-rise market and have asked you to prepare professional concept design reports that they can present to the board in order to decide whether to pursue these initiatives.
Brief.
You are required to work through the element of the building each week to follow the lectorial and discussions to identify and analyze and discuss about the following building structure and building services.

Assignment 2 – Structures

The assignment will require a general review of the following structural elements. Also, you will be required to provide detailed comment on the construction methodology and issues of the following key elements.

General construction methodology

  • Concrete pumping (type, location)
  • Breaking up the pour
  • Crane type / capacity / location
  • Material handling / storage and waste management
  • site access management

Floor system analysis

  • Lateral stability systems
  • Floor structure – concrete
  • Floor structure – steel

Propping and back propping analysis

  • Propping / Back propping
  • Site sequencing and floor cycle
  • Floor system – Sequencing / program

Core and basement analysis

  • Footings and retaining walls
  • Basement – excavation
  • Core – form work

Each of the assignments will follow a section to be considered week by week supported with learning material. You can work through each section as the course develops. Relevant questions and discussions will be posted by course coordinators and classmate in “Discussion Board Assignment 1A to help you build up the analysis and discussion in the Assignment 2. Regularly engaging with the course and contribute to the discussion will create better knowledge sharing and better learning environment.

Submission

Each report is to have the following format and address the issues listed below.

  • Executive Summary,
  • Table of Contents,
  • Introduction,
  • Main part of Report:
  • Analysis of structural systems or building services systems
  • Discuss site constraints and material handling Recommendations, Conclusions.
  • Mark up drawings, Tables, etc.

Maximum 5,000 words including everything or maximum 20 pages.
Marking rubric for both assessment 2 and 3 is included in this instruction.
Notes: Bluebeam Revu 20 software license has been provided for FREE to help you prepare markups and annotations on provided drawings. However, you can use any software that you are familiar with.
