Assignment #2 – Fake News? Misinformation, Disinformation and Propaganda in
Cyberspace
Instructions:
This assignment is very different from our first one. In order to answer the questions
below, you will have to do some online research. You can use either media or
academic sources to get your answers. If you also find relevant content from the
course materials, feel free to incorporate it as well.
Questions:
1. What is the difference between the following terms:
a. Fake news
b. Misinformation
c. Disinformation
d. Propaganda
2. Provide three examples of fake news or disinformation about COVID-19. Of the
three examples, which is the most troubling and why?
3. What are deep fakes? Why are they especially problematic when it comes to
separating fact from fiction in the online sphere?
4. Recently, Jack Dorsey (CEO, Twitter) and Mark Zuckerberg (CEO, Facebook) got into
a major disagreement about the spread of false information on social media sites.
What was this dispute about? Whose viewpoint do you agree with and why?
5. Briefly describe three skills any informed citizen needs to develop when assessing
online information in today’s world. How will these particular skills help to stop the
spread of misinformation in cyberspace?
Guidelines:
You can answer the questions in first person (“I”).
Your assignment should be submitted as a WORD or PDF file only. No other extensions
(e.g. pages) will be accepted.
Your completed assignment should be 1.5 to 2.5 pages in total (single-spaced). Answer
each question separately in paragraph format.
Use 12 font, Times new Roman, Ariel or Calibri.
Reference all materials in APA or MLA as required. If you don’t know how to reference
certain materials, please look this up or consult with York’s library services.
A works cited page is required.
All assignments should be done individually. Students who plagiarize will be subject to
the appropriate consequences as determined by the instructor and the Natural
Science director.
The due date for this assignment is Sunday June 21 at 11:59pm. You will submit your
work in the Turn it In assignment drop-box located below these instructions.
For this assignment, the penalty for late submissions is a deduction of 5% for the
first 2 hours past the original deadline. Following this, the penalty will be 10% per
day up to a maximum of five days.
