Carlo Dominguez a 36-year-old man Case Study

You are a family nurse practitioner seeing Carlo Dominguez, a 36-year-old man. Your nurse reports that Carlo has not been cooperative in his medication protocols, in particular refusing to use his asthma inhalers. Fluent in Spanish, Carlo does not speak or read English, but his partner, Matías (also fluent in Spanish), is available to translate. Matías’s English skills are good; Carlo’s are poor. They are both native Spanish speakers and their Spanish is excellent.

(“Good” means “Able to speak the language with sufficient accuracy and vocabulary to have effective formal and informal conversations on most familiar topics. …May have some difficulty communicating necessary health concepts” [Table 1, Diamond et al., 2012Links to an external site.].)

Create a 3- to 5-minute video of you talking to your assigned family, showing how you would approach getting the initial information you need to assist your patient. Speak to the person and/or family as if you are speaking in any clinical setting. How do you introduce yourself and begin conversation with them? What patient-centered questions do you ask to help you communicate more effectively?
